ConExpo’s First Vibratory Rubber Tire Roller Excels on HMA Projects
Las Vegas, Nevada - Sakai America recently demonstrated their world’s first Vibratory Rubber Tire Roller, the GW750, for the first time ever at ConExpo ’05.
The new machine has been grabbing rave reviews in the field for its ability to conquer the difficult-to-compact SuperPave and other mix designs. The challenge: Any hot asphalt mix technology that is as tough as Superpave to place and compact is doubtless tough enough to withstand many years of constant heavy traffic. The tougher the mix is to compact, the tougher it is to stand up to added compaction of heavy trucks and problems like rutting, raveling and prematurely falling apart before our tax-paying eyes.
The primary problem with Superpave has always been the issue of the mix, once in place, becoming tender as it cools. With Superpave immediately being identified as a time-sensitive mix, becoming more and more difficult to work with as it cooled, contractors were required to add more equipment and labor to get the job done or seek help from the OEMs.
Along the way, some other specific problems have cropped up. With profiling of bituminous pavements and thin lift overlays of those pavements becoming a standard practice in some areas, another unique problem awaited an OEM solution. In many of these cases, depending on the specific mix design employed, it was discovered by core samples that the mix wasn’t necessarily being seated properly in the profiled grooves. No interlock meant that many times the pavement could delaminate under traffic and over a short period of time. Neither conventional vibratory double drum rollers nor pneumatic tire rollers were able to consistently solve the problem. The combination of the vibration and the kneading action seats these mixes well.
Innovative contractors, faced with both the Superpave issue as well as the thin lift over profiled surfaces issue, are discovering that this new concept roller will solve both of these problems. Superpave mixes are a challenge across North America. Since many states also offer bonus incentives and dish out penalties, contractors are always on the lookout for compaction equipment that meets density and other DOT demands fast.
Consistent with other advanced products recently brought to market by this OEM, the new combination of pneumatic tire and vibration is bringing much success to innovative contractors. The new concept employs a vibratory shaft housed within a series of specially designed rubber tires. The tires actually vibrate, with the combination of vibration and kneading effect giving both the density and finish desired.
According to Dave Brown, Vice President – Marketing and Sales for Sakai, “Unlike any other roller type or brand in the world, this vibratory pneumatic tire roller gets consistent density throughout the thickness of
the mat. This machine makes a tough mix like Superpave even more durable.”
With Superpave and other contemporary mix designs causing so many problems early on, the company’s engineers saw the new machine as a timely solution to a lot of issues that are currently causing problems on the jobsite. While many contractors employed static pneumatics in the Superpave rolling train, the pneumatics were just too slow to benefit a mix design that relied on speed to gain compaction and finish before the mat temperature dropped to the point of the infamous and tricky tender zone.
Not unlike double drum steel vibratories, the new roller offers four different amplitude settings to suit the application. The roller can run static, like a conventional pneumatic and offers a choice of four other outputs up to a high force equal to or greater than a 55,000-pound
pneumatic. The machine itself weighs just over 20,000 pounds with a rolling width of 77 inches. So you can get a considerable amount of force out of a relatively small package.
The GW750 has found its way into a number of different rolling scenarios. Combined with a pair of 79-inch double drums on the front end and a balanced three-wheeler bringing up the rear, this four-roller train has had much success solving contemporary mix problems, with compaction and smoothness achieved before the tender zone and bonuses gained when it’s time to go home.
The new vibratory pneumatic tire roller appears to be well designed and well timed to meet the needs of the Superpave paving contractor. And effective April 1, 2005, Sakai’s new, industry-leading Extended Power Train Warranty applies to all rollers shipped from the factory. For more information on this machine, contact Brown at Sakai at 800-323-0535 or d-brown@sakaiamerica.com.
Sakai High Frequency Asphalt Roller Line Lives Up to ‘Masters of Compaction’ Status
Las Vegas, Nevada – Those who can remember way back to ConExpo ’99 may also remember that that was the year Sakai shocked the industry with the announcement of the world’s first production line roller with vibration frequencies running at 4000 vpm.
In those days, most paving contractors had probably never even thought about vibration frequency, except in conjunction with the number of impacts per foot, which they had always heard should be kept at between ten and twelve. Competition at that show was equally surprised at the announcement and immediately countered with their own ideas that high frequency rollers meant nothing. Strange that they are all now either in possession of such rollers or are still trying to achieve that goal.
Over these past six years, Sakai rollers have done nothing less than prove to the asphalt paving world exactly what they promised to prove at
that show. In the meantime, Sakai has expanded the high frequency
concept to cover their entire line from the smallest 39-inch-wide double drum, to the largest 84-inch-wide machine.
For those who haven’t been involved, here’s why Sakai originally designed high frequency rollers and why they are important today. It all began when the very first asphalt contractor laid the very first Superpave mix and tried to compact it using rollers and patterns designed for a prior life’s HMA. These poor souls were running smack into a tender zone that prevented them from reaching density until well after the mix had cooled.
What to do? Wait until the mix cooled and try again? Continue rolling and really mess up the job? While all the OEMs trying to market compaction equipment jumped right in and offered help, most decided to try to fix the mix after the “zone” rather than nip it at the bud. Sakai took the high road and immediately determined that the solution involved speed rather than force.
Thus, they developed the higher frequencies that enable those 10-12 impacts per foot spacing and at proportionately higher, and most desirable ground speeds. A 2000 vpm roller can roll at 2.78 mph and
achieve 10 impacts per foot. A 4000 vpm roller can roll twice as fast and still achieve the 10 impacts per foot. Speed is key. Speed is important to breakdown and speed is important to achieving density before the tender zone. Speed of the overall job is important to getting done and making bonuses. It’s all about speed rather than brute force.
Following 1999 and through much experimentation on jobsite conditions, Sakai engineers have determined that the perfect roller train now consists of two 79” Sakai high frequency 4000 vpm double drum vibratories performing the breakdown passes, followed by a new Sakai GW750 vibratory pneumatic roller as the intermediate roller and a Sakai 83” wide balanced three wheeler bringing up the rear.
Early on, the main concerns about 4000 vpm rollers were all about reliability. And rightly so. Some OEMs had tried to crank up their vpm without redesigning the system. Results were poor as the vibration system bearings were crashing at an alarming rate. Safe to say that Sakai’s entire system was redesigned to handle the higher frequencies and that over the past six years, Sakai customers have experienced a minimal failure rate with many hours logged. Sakai rollers are doing what the engineers designed them to do and they are doing it very well.
Effective April 1, 2005, Sakai’s new, industry-leading Extended Power Train Warranty applies to all rollers shipped from the factory. For more information on Sakai high frequency vibratory asphalt rollers or the complete line of Sakai compaction equipment, contact Sakai at your local authorized dealer or log on to www.sakaiamerica.com.
New High Force Sakai Vibratory Compactor Brings Economy to Big Earthmoving Jobs
Las Vegas, Nevada – ConExpo ’05 was the site of the first such viewing of Sakai’s new Model SV505 Series vibratory soil compactors.
This new machine is designed to bring low ownership and operating costs to a wide range of earthmoving projects from large commercial and industrial tracts to embankments, dams, reservoirs plus airport and highway subbases. The SV505 Series is available in both smooth drum for semi-cohesive soils and granular materials and padfoot configuration for cohesive silts and clay.
The high force series develops centrifugal forces up to 55,120 pounds and total applied forces up to 68,590 pounds over the machine’s 84-inch-wide drums. Dual amplitude is standard as are some of the highest amplitudes on the market.
Both models feature drum drive for additional traction up steep slopes
and over difficult terrain. The drum drive feature also helps to pull the material beneath the drum for optimum compaction. The SV505D (smooth drum) and SV505T (padfoot) are driven by a 125 hp Cummins water-cooled diesel engine for optimum power with fuel economy. A two-speed hydrostatic transmission enables ground speeds up to 6.2 mph. Both models are equipped with a three-way braking system: Hydrostatic braking at the forward-reverse lever, a spring applied, hydraulically released brake and an automotive-like foot brake.
Its heavy-duty center hitch holds both halves of this 12-ton roller together. It also enables both hydraulically controlled articulated steering for optimum maneuverability and radial oscillation to maintain drum contact over rough terrain.
An industry leading shock isolation system directs all vibration downward into the material under compaction and away from the operator and critical machine components.
Like all Sakai compaction equipment, the SV505 Series includes ROPS and seat belts as standard operating equipment. And effective April 1, 2005, Sakai’s new, industry-leading Extended Power Train Warranty applies to all rollers shipped from the factory. For more information, contact your local Sakai dealer or Sakai direct at 800-323-0535 or www.sakaiamerica.com.
Sakai Innovation Raises the Compaction Bar to New Levels
Las Vegas, Nevada – With many compaction OEMs choosing to stand pat with their product lines these days, upstart Sakai continues to make gains with product concepts new to the industry.
This attitude, which has been in place since the company took root over 87 years ago, is beginning to gain the attention of both earthmoving and asphalt contractors looking for new ways to gain an edge on their competition.
ConExpo ’99 High Frequency Move
Quietly moving forward with many small but important technical advances over the years, Sakai took a giant step forward at ConExpo ’99 with their announcement of the first of what is now a full line-up of high frequency 4000 vpm vibratory asphalt rollers.
According to Dave Brown, Sakai Vice President of Sales and Marketing in
North America, “Superpave and other contemporary mix designs require speed to succeed and our engineers took note of that early on.” Brown refers to the need for a breakdown roller that can get the aggregate particles in motion quickly. The key to success in beating the infamous tender zone is to gain compaction before the mix cools. “While all of our competitors chose to find compaction solutions after the tender zone and after the mix cooled, we were determined to beat the zone with faster, more creative solutions.” And they have. The entire Sakai double drum line is 4000 vpm +.
ConExpo ’02 Brings New Soil Compactor
Landfill construction is a small market generally overlooked by compactor manufacturers. For years, this growing industry has been forced to compact steep slopes with a vibratory roller winched up the slope using a bulldozer at the top of the hill. This of course because a conventional wheel-driven compactor cannot climb these slopes while vibrating.
Once again, Sakai engineers came to the rescue, taking a field-proven, high force Sakai vibratory soil compactor and redesigning the propulsion system to include a track drive. This CV550 Series is now compacting slopes up to 45º without the need for the dozer, the winch or the
operator. Claims Brown, “We have totally eliminated the high cost of an extra machine and operator while solving this compaction need.” Contractors have also found other uses for the machine, compacting steep embankments and earthen dams and the like.
The Peanut Butter and Chocolate Approach
Another Superpave Superoller from Sakai is the vibratory pneumatic tire roller introduced at World of Asphalt. The GW750 made its ConExpo debut at this year’s show in Las Vegas where Sakai engineers demonstrated its unique vibrating capabilities.
Pneumatic rollers have long been known for the kneading action they develop that seals the surface of an HMA mix. Vibratory double drums gain density by moving the aggregate particles to eliminate voids.
Sakai engineers combined these two theories into one new machine – the vibratory pneumatic tire roller. This new roller incorporates a shaft with vibrating eccentric weights within specially designed pneumatic tires. The machine gives a more thorough density throughout the mix, making it a winner as both a breakdown or intermediate roller.
New roller trains featuring two Sakai 4000 vpm double drums as
breakdown rollers, the GW750 rolling intermediate and the Sakai R2H-1 balanced three wheeler – a Sakai innovation of the 80s – for finish, have proven themselves very successful in overcoming contemporary mix problems.
Sakai has also discovered a bonus application for the GW750. A growing trend toward thin lift, hot mix overlays of profiled surfaces has raised density issues in some locations. More specifically, these thin lifts are not always seating themselves in the grooves. Results may include delamination of the overlay under traffic.
“The GW750 actually vibrates the hot mix into the grooves,” states Brown, “and provides an excellent interlock between the new mix and the old surface.”
Other Concepts Give Sakai the Innovation Lead
Given the opportunity, vibratory rollers could easily shake themselves (and their operators along with them) apart. So manufacturers isolate these high forces from machine and operator by using a specially designed series of isolators. Sakai research has proven that by placing these isolators between the frame and the drive system, rather than between the drive system and the drum, they not only do a better job
of isolating these damaging wave forms, but the rotational stresses
caused by mounting the isolator on the drum sidewall are eliminated. According to John Golka, Sakai America’s Product Support Manager, “These isolators cost a couple of hundred dollars apiece. I can’t remember when we last sold one.”
Counter-rotating weights is another concept that pays big dividends on hot mix paving jobs. Most manufacturers tend to rotate the eccentric weights in both their front and rear drums in the same direction. This means that the centrifugal forces are distributed radially, which in turn tends to push or pull the drums in those directions, possibly shoving the mix in the process.
Sakai engineers rotate all front and rear drum weights in opposite directions with all resultant forces confined to an up and down motion, thus ensuring that the force goes where the engineers want it to go and where the customer needs it.
And for safety’s sake, every Sakai roller marketed in North America includes ROPS and seat belts as standard equipment. Sakai doesn’t consider these features innovations; they consider them common sense.

New Sakai Compactor Brings Big Compaction Punch to Smaller Soil Applications
Adairsville, GA - Sakai America, Inc. recently introduced a small soil compactor with big compactor features.
The new roller - the SV201TB - is capable of developing 400 pounds per inch of total applied force over its 54"-wide padfoot drum. This compaction capability, combined with numerous other value features, enables rapid compaction of cohesive silts and clays on slopes up to 45% and over any materials compromised by moist conditions.
In addition, the the SV201TB is a padfoot compactor, which speeds compaction of fine materials while aiding traction over any terrain or material condition. Drive at the drum, as well as the wheels, adds to its rough terrain and slope capabilities. Center-point articulated steering enables the machine to maneuver up close to foundations, walls, footings and pipe placements. A strike-off blade provides trench backfilling and rough grading without the need for additional equipment or labor. The machine is ideal for utility work or trench backfill and compaction.
Powered by a fuel-efficient 60 hp Cummins, liquid-cooled diesel engine, the the SV201TB is able to achieve compaction quickly and easily on smaller jobs regardless of jobsite terrain or conditions. Other reliability features include the same heavy-duty oscillation/articulation joint design as that of the larger SV400 and SV510 Series. Small 4000 VPM Rollers Big Hits Amongst Contractors
Adairsville, GA - Sakai America recently showed for the first time a new line-up of mid-sized, double drum vibratory asphalt rollers for public works and smaller compaction jobs.
These great new machines - SW300, SW320, and SW330, were tailored after Sakai's field-proven large asphalt rollers. They offer 4000VPM vibration speed, which allows the operator a choice of increasing the ground speed while maintaining the customary 10-12 impacts per foot spacing required for density and smoothness. Or a typical ground speed can be maintained, increasing the number of impacts per foot and perhaps allowing density to be achieved in fewer passes. Using either technique, productivity will be enhanced. A test strip will tell the operator which technique will work best.
In addition to high-speed vibration, Sakai representatives demonstrated numerous other features designed to benefit the owner-operator:
- Sakai's unique counter-rotational eccentric system in the compaction drums promote a smooth surface finish with forces always directed downward into the material.
- Dual drum drive, which ensures excellent traction and elimination of bow wave build-up in front of the drums.
- Superb 360 and drum edge visibility on both sides from the comfortable bench seat.
- Sakai's patented isolator system at each drum direct compaction energy down into the material while minimizing component fatigue. Further shock isolation at the operator's platform virtually eliminates any shock or vibration from reaching the operator.
- Sakai's unique WaterSaver pressurized spray-sprinkler systems, a multiple-filtered water supply and quick-release spray nozzles combine with a 48-gallon polyethylene reservoir for on-the-job reliability 24/7/365.
- A hydrostatic, multi-disc braking system is supported by an additional footbrake for added safety.
- High 21- inch curb clearances on both sides of the machine make rolling in urban areas a snap.
- A standard RollOver Protective Structure folds down for shipping and working in height confined areas.
- A fuel efficient, liquid-cooled diesel engine provides optimum power with fuel economy.
These three new models have been designed to handle a wide range of mid-sized compaction chores - from county and municipal roads, to parking areas, bicycle paths and tennis courts - quickly, easily and cost-effectively.

Trio of Sakai 4000 VPM Rollers Increases Paving Productivity
Adairsville, GA - SAKAI America has recently introduced a trio of high frequency vibratory rollers designed to make density quickly on SuperPave and other HMA mixes. The threesome includes double drum widths of 67" (SW800), 79" (SW850) and new 84" (SW900) in a package of standard features not available anywhere else on the market. Sakai President Ichiro Sakai and his staff were on hand to point out the advantages of the Sakai SuperPave-friendly rollers.
These high frequency rollers were designed for Superpave and other mixes that may exhibit a tender zone as the mix cools. Contractors need to speed up their compaction process, but speeding up their vibratory roller without increasing their vibration frequency just stretches out the impact spacing and reduces density. So it's counterproductive.
Sakai Vice President and General Manager Dick Draper claims that, "By offering 4000 VPM impact frequency, we can increase roller ground speed, maintain the required 10-12 impact per foot spacing and beat the tender zone without sacrificing density." This is a major advancement in the industry and one that both SuperPave pros and asphalt contractors in general will appreciate. But whether the job involves SuperPave or any other asphalt mixture, these machines reach required density faster than any other machine on the market. That fact alone is going to save contractors time and money, which is not only going to mean more profit, but will also drastically reduce the chance of penalty. Substantial reductions in road noise are also a plus.
With the inception of their 4000-vpm series, Sakai has now substantially raised the bar on all other manufacturers of vibratory rollers in the industry. Two main features of the machines are the Sakai counter-rotating vibration system, which directs forces downward in the material, and the Sakai patented isolator system, which keeps vibration from machine components and the operator. All models include as standard features R.O.P.S. & seat belts; high centrifugal force; a powerful, fuel-efficient turbo-charged, liquid-cooled diesel engine; dual amplitude; three switchable frequencies; center-point articulated steering; a hydrostatic transmission; hydrostatic and spring-applied, hydraulically-released brakes plus a foot brake; and a pressurized, triple-filtered water spray system.
Current compaction performance research irrefutably supports the fact that these machines are faster and more productive than any other same-sized vibratory roller available today. Documented, typical productivity results are as follows:
- SW800: 236 tons per hour (4 passes on a 2" mat @ 10 impacts per foot)
- SW850: 556 tons per hour (4 passes on a 4" mat @ 10 impacts per foot)
- SW900: 592 tons per hour (4 passes on a 4" mat @ 10 impacts per foot)
New option for even higher productivity - Research over the years has proven that optimum impact spacing for a vibratory roller output is between 10-12 impacts per foot.
A new on-board Sakai option dubbed ExactCompact enables the operator to discover optimum settings on a test strip, then program them into the roller. A series of yellow, green and red lights invite the operator to adjust his ground speed to match the lights, thus confirming the correct setting. This enables a quick and accurate adjustment without the need for a frequency meter or additional ground labor.
